Every floor scrubber will have issues from time to time. Most of them are easy to fix once you know what to look for. This guide covers the ten most common problems facility managers and operators run into — and what to do about each one before calling a technician.
A floor scrubber is a workhorse. It runs daily, handles abuse, and keeps floors clean. But like any piece of equipment, things go wrong. Most problems are simple to diagnose and fix — a clogged hose, a worn squeegee blade, a battery that needs watering. This guide walks through the ten most common issues and the step-by-step fix for each. If you have a multimeter and a basic tool kit, you can solve 90% of scrubber problems yourself.
Symptom: The machine leaves a wet trail behind after scrubbing.
Possible causes: Worn or damaged squeegee blade, debris caught in the squeegee or vacuum hose, vacuum motor not running, recovery tank full or float valve stuck.
Start with the easiest check: inspect the squeegee blade. If it is worn, nicked, or curled, replace it. A worn squeegee is the number one cause of poor water pickup. Next, check the vacuum hose for clogs — food wrappers, gum wrappers, and debris from the floor can get sucked up and block the hose. Make sure the recovery tank is not full (the float valve will shut off vacuum suction when the tank is full). Finally, listen for the vacuum motor. If it is not running, check the switch and wiring connections.
Symptom: The scrubber moves forward but the brush does not rotate.
Possible causes: Brush deck not engaged, brush motor tripped the circuit breaker, debris wrapped around the brush hub, broken drive belt (on belt-driven models), or brush wear sensor activated.
Check that the brush deck engagement switch is on. If the brush still does not spin, lift the deck and inspect for debris — string, mop heads, and plastic wrap can get wrapped around the brush hub and stall the motor. Check the circuit breaker on the control panel. Motors can trip breakers when they overheat or when debris causes them to stall. Let the motor cool for 15 minutes, clear any debris, and reset the breaker. If the brush spins freely by hand but the motor does not run, the motor may need replacement.
Symptom: Runtime is significantly shorter than when the machine was new.
Possible causes: Batteries reaching end of life (3–5 year lifespan), low water level in flooded lead-acid batteries, charger not working properly, sulfation from improper charging, or leaving the machine on charge too long.
Check the battery water level first — flooded lead-acid batteries need distilled water added regularly. Low water levels damage the plates and reduce capacity. Next, test the charger output with a multimeter. The charger should output the correct voltage for your battery pack (24V or 36V depending on the machine). If the charger checks out, have the batteries load-tested at a battery shop. Batteries that cannot hold a load need replacement. For AGM or gel batteries, there is no water to check — they simply age out after 3–5 years.
Symptom: Puddles of water under the machine when parked or during operation.
Possible causes: Cracked recovery tank, loose drain hose cap, damaged tank-to-tank hose, solution tank overfill, or drain hose not capped after emptying.
Check the drain hoses first — this is the most common source of leaks. Make sure the drain caps are tight and the hoses are not cracked at the connection points. If the leak is coming from the bottom of the recovery tank, inspect the tank for cracks (common on machines that have been bumped into walls or docked too hard). Small cracks in plastic tanks can be repaired with a plastic welding kit. Large cracks require tank replacement. Check the solution tank overflow hose — overfilling the solution tank can cause water to escape through the overflow vent.
Symptom: After scrubbing, the floor has visible streaks or a hazy film.
Possible causes: Dirty squeegee blade, wrong brush type for the floor, dirty solution tank or filters, using too much chemical, or the floor was not pre-swept.
Start with the squeegee — a dirty or worn blade leaves streaks. Clean or replace it. Next, check the brush. Using a brush that is too stiff for the floor surface can leave scratch marks and swirl patterns. Make sure you are using the correct brush type for your flooring. If the solution tank is dirty, flush it with clean water and check the solution filter. Buildup from old chemicals can clog the solution flow and cause uneven cleaning. Reduce the chemical concentration if you are using more than the manufacturer's recommended dilution. Finally, always sweep or dust mop the floor before scrubbing. Loose dirt on the floor turns into mud when mixed with scrubber solution.
Symptom: Foam filling the recovery tank and triggering the float valve shutoff.
Possible causes: Using the wrong chemical, too much chemical, chemical residue from previous cleaning, or the presence of wax stripper residue.
Foam is caused by chemical agitation in the recovery tank. The simplest fix is to add a defoamer to the recovery tank — most chemical suppliers sell defoamer specifically for floor scrubbers. Alternatively, reduce the chemical concentration in the solution tank. If the problem persists, flush the entire system with clean water to remove chemical residue buildup. For facilities that use wax strippers or high-foaming chemicals, always run a clean water rinse through the system after use to prevent foam issues on the next cleaning cycle.
Symptom: The scrubber powers on but does not drive forward or backward.
Possible causes: Drive motor circuit breaker tripped, drive belt broken or slipped off, parking brake engaged, or the operator presence switch (seat switch) is not activated.
On ride-on scrubbers, the seat switch is a common culprit. If the operator presence switch is not pressed, the drive system will not engage. Make sure the operator is properly seated. Check the drive motor circuit breaker — look for a tripped breaker on the control panel and reset it. For walk-behind scrubbers with a drive motor, check that the drive belt is intact and properly tensioned. A broken or loose drive belt will prevent the machine from moving. If the drive motor runs but the wheels do not turn, the gearbox or transmission may need servicing.
Symptom: The brush spins but no water or cleaning solution comes out.
Possible causes: Solution tank empty, solution valve not opening, clogged solution filter, kinked solution hose, or the solenoid valve is faulty.
First, make sure the solution tank has water. Check that the solution valve is turned on — some machines have a manual ball valve in addition to the electronic solenoid. If the valve is on and the tank is full, check the solution filter. The filter is usually located where the hose exits the solution tank. Remove and clean it. If the filter is clean, check the hose for kinks. If the hose is clear and the filter is clean but no solution flows, the solenoid valve may be faulty — you should hear an audible click when the solenoid engages. No click means the solenoid needs replacement.
Symptom: Grinding, rattling, or squealing noise coming from under the machine.
Possible causes: Debris caught in the brush deck, worn brush bearing, brush hitting the deck shroud, or a loose brush hub.
Stop the machine immediately and inspect the brush deck. The most common cause is debris — a metal bolt, a piece of wire, or a heavy plastic item caught between the brush and the deck shroud. Clear any debris you find. If the noise is a grinding sound, the brush bearing may be worn and need replacement. If the brush is hitting the shroud, the brush may be installed incorrectly or the shroud may be bent. Remove the brush, inspect the hub and mounting hardware, and reinstall. If the noise persists after clearing debris and checking the brush, have the motor bearings inspected by a technician.
Symptom: Plugging in the charger shows an error light or the battery does not charge.
Possible causes: Charger not compatible with battery type, battery voltage too low for the charger to detect, blown fuse in the charger, or a bad connection at the charging port.
Check the charger compatibility first — using the wrong charger for your battery type (flooded vs AGM vs gel) can prevent charging. If the battery voltage is extremely low (below 18V on a 24V system), some chargers will not recognize the battery. Try charging with a known good charger or use a "boost" mode if available. Check the charger fuse — many chargers have an internal or in-line fuse that can blow. Check the charging port on the machine for corrosion or damaged pins. Clean corrosion with a wire brush or contact cleaner. If the charger still shows an error, the charger itself may need replacement.
Preventive maintenance is the best troubleshooting: Most of these problems can be prevented with a simple daily checklist: empty and rinse the recovery tank after each use, check and clean the squeegee blades, inspect the brush for wear, check battery water levels weekly, and keep the machine clean. A machine that gets basic daily care has dramatically fewer problems over its life. A walk-behind scrubber that is maintained properly can run reliably for 7–10 years.

Quick rule of thumb: If the problem involves water, check the squeegee first. If the problem involves movement, check the battery and charger first. If the problem involves noise, stop the machine and look for debris first. These three checks solve the majority of scrubber issues before they become service calls.
Squeegee blades should be replaced every 3–6 months depending on usage frequency and floor surface condition. Rough or textured flooring wears blades faster. Inspect the blade edge weekly — if you see nicks, curling, or uneven wear, replace it. A worn squeegee is the most common cause of poor water pickup and streaky floors.
After each use: empty and rinse the recovery tank with clean water, flush the solution tank if it had chemical in it, wipe down the squeegee blades and brush, and leave the recovery tank lid open to dry. Once per week, clean the solution filter and check battery water levels (for flooded batteries). Monthly, inspect the vacuum hose for clogs and check all hose connections for leaks.
If you have checked the common causes listed above and the problem persists, call a technician. Specific situations that need a technician: electrical issues beyond the battery and charger (controller board faults, motor winding failures), transmission or gearbox problems, hydraulic system issues (on ride-on machines), and structural damage to the frame or tank. If the repair involves cutting wires, welding, or opening sealed components, it is time to call in a professional.
No. Only use chemicals labeled as "auto-scrubber compatible" or "low-foaming." Household floor cleaners, bleach-based products, and high-foaming detergents will create excessive foam in the recovery tank and may damage the machine's seals and hoses. Stick to neutral pH floor cleaners designed for automatic scrubbers. Your chemical supplier can recommend the right product for your floor type and machine.
If the machine will not be used for 30 days or more: fully charge the batteries, disconnect the battery cables or turn off the battery disconnect switch, empty and dry all tanks, leave the recovery tank lid open, store in a dry location above freezing, and charge the batteries every 30 days during storage. Batteries self-discharge over time and can be damaged if left completely discharged for extended periods.
