A floor scrubber is a safe machine when used correctly. But it is also a piece of industrial equipment with moving parts, batteries, chemicals, and water — each with its own safety considerations. Most operator injuries are preventable with basic training and awareness. This guide covers the essential safety practices every scrubber operator should know.
Every facility manager wants their cleaning team to be safe. Floor scrubbers are one of the safest pieces of cleaning equipment available, but they still require proper training and awareness. Most scrubber-related incidents involve slips, chemical exposure, battery handling, or improper machine operation. All of them are preventable. This guide covers the ten most important safety practices every scrubber operator should follow — from pre-operation checks to post-use maintenance.
The minimum PPE for floor scrubber operation includes non-slip waterproof shoes, chemical-resistant gloves, and safety glasses. Non-slip shoes protect the operator from slipping on wet floors — the same floors they are cleaning. Chemical-resistant gloves prevent skin contact with cleaning solutions and dirty water. Safety glasses protect against splashes when filling solution tanks or emptying recovery tanks. For facilities that use concentrated chemicals, add a chemical apron and a face shield for the chemical handling area.
A five-minute pre-operation check prevents most equipment-related incidents. Before starting the machine each shift, inspect: squeegee blades for damage or debris, brush for wear or entanglement, solution and recovery tank for cracks or leaks, all hoses for kinks or damage, horn and emergency stop button for proper function, and battery connections for corrosion or loose cables. If any issue is found, tag the machine and report it. Do not operate a machine with a known safety defect.
Always place wet floor signs before starting to clean. Place one sign at each end of the cleaning zone so approaching foot traffic can see the warning from both directions. Do not start cleaning until the signs are in position. Remove signs only after the floor is completely dry — with a floor scrubber, this usually takes 3–5 minutes. Never rely on the machine's drying speed alone; signs stay up until you have confirmed the floor is dry to the touch. Store signs visibly near each scrubber charging station so operators do not forget them.

Walk at a normal walking pace — never run or push the machine faster than the brush can effectively clean. Keep both hands on the handle and both feet on the floor at all times. Do not ride on walk-behind machines or carry passengers on ride-on machines. When turning, slow down to prevent the machine from tipping or sliding on wet surfaces. Watch for floor drains, elevator gaps, and uneven surfaces. If the machine feels unstable, stop and assess before proceeding. Never operate a scrubber on stairs or escalators.
Cleaning chemicals are one of the biggest hidden risks in floor scrubber operation. Always follow the manufacturer's recommended dilution ratio — using more chemical than recommended does not clean better and creates slip hazards from excess residue. Store chemicals in labeled containers in a ventilated area. Never mix chemicals. When filling the solution tank, add water first, then add the chemical to prevent splashing. If chemical gets on skin or in eyes, flush with clean water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Keep the safety data sheet (SDS) for each chemical accessible near the cleaning supply area.
Battery safety is critical. Lead-acid batteries produce hydrogen gas during charging, which is explosive in concentrated amounts. Always charge in a well-ventilated area. Keep the charging area free of sparks, open flames, and smoking. Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves when checking or filling battery cells. Add distilled water only — never tap water. Keep battery terminals clean and tight. If you smell rotten eggs (hydrogen sulfide), stop charging immediately and ventilate the area. For AGM and gel batteries, there is no water to check, but all other charging precautions apply.
The operator's work area includes wet floors, which means the operator is at risk of slipping too. Non-slip shoes are essential. Keep the operator platform on ride-on scrubbers clean and dry. When emptying the recovery tank, dispose of dirty water in a designated floor sink or drain — never pour it on the ground or into storm drains. Check local regulations for proper disposal of floor cleaning wastewater, especially in facilities that use chemicals. If the machine leaks during operation, stop immediately, place a wet floor sign, and address the leak before continuing.
Walk-behind scrubbers can handle gentle ramps, but there are limits. When going up a ramp: lean the machine back slightly to keep the brush deck and squeegee in contact with the surface. When going down: control the speed with the handle, not the drive trigger. Never leave a machine unattended on a ramp. For steep ramps or outdoor inclines, use a machine with traction assist (the A3D) to prevent the operator from losing control. If the machine feels unstable on an incline, find an alternate route or clean the area manually.
After finishing the cleaning shift: empty and rinse both tanks — leaving dirty water in the recovery tank creates bacteria and odor. Rinse the squeegee blades and brush to remove chemical residue. Wipe down the machine exterior to prevent chemical buildup on controls and surfaces. Park the machine in its designated charging area with the parking brake engaged (ride-on models) or the wheels chocked. Leave the recovery tank lid open to air dry. Plug in the charger and confirm the charging light is on. A machine that is properly cleaned after each use is safer for the next operator and lasts longer.
Every operator should know the location of the emergency stop button before they start the machine. On TerraScrub models, the emergency stop is a large red button on the control panel. Press it firmly to stop all machine functions immediately. Know the location of the nearest first aid kit and eyewash station. If an operator is injured, do not move them unless they are in immediate danger — call for medical help. Report all incidents, including near-misses, to the facility safety manager. Key safety principle for operators: If something does not look, sound, or feel right — stop. A floor scrubber is a simple machine. Unusual noises, vibrations, leaks, or smells are almost always early warning signs of a problem that will get worse if ignored. Stopping and checking costs five minutes. Ignoring a warning sign can cost a lot more.
New operators should receive hands-on training before operating a scrubber alone. The training should cover: pre-operation inspection, correct brush and chemical selection for each floor type, safe operation (speed, turning, ramps), emergency stop procedure, post-operation cleaning and charging, and PPE requirements. Most operators reach basic competence after 20–30 minutes of guided practice. A written operator manual should be kept with each machine for reference.
Use the service elevator whenever possible. Before loading, drain both tanks to reduce weight. Secure the machine with the parking brake (ride-on) or wheel chocks (walk-behind) during transport. Never ride the machine in an elevator — walk it in, set the brake, and walk it out. For walk-behind models on stairs, use two people and lift the machine, never drag it up or down stairs by the handle.
Only on covered outdoor surfaces with proper drainage. Most walk-behind scrubbers are designed for indoor use on flat, smooth surfaces. Using them on uneven outdoor terrain, steep inclines, or surfaces without proper water drainage can create safety hazards. For outdoor cleaning, use machines specifically designed for outdoor use with appropriate traction and water management systems.
Press the emergency stop button immediately. If the machine is smoking, unplug the charger if it is connected. Evacuate the area and call the facility safety manager. Do not use water on an electrical fire — use a Class C fire extinguisher if one is available. After the machine has cooled, have a qualified technician inspect it before returning it to service. Smoking or burning smells usually indicate an electrical short or motor failure.
Annual refresher training is recommended for all scrubber operators. New operators need initial training before first use. Additional training is needed when a new machine model is introduced, when cleaning chemicals change, or after any safety incident. Keep a training log for each operator with dates and topics covered. Facilities with high staff turnover may need quarterly training sessions to maintain consistent safety standards.
